2014 Winterfest Planning Underway
The 2013 Waterbury Winterfest was a full weekend of events celebrating outdoor recreation in Waterbury. The community was invited to play, watch and cheer these events. Harwood Union High School held a race featuring six high school cross country ski teams competing under the lights on the Dac Rowe fields in the heart of Waterbury's downtown. There was a community bonfire and skating party followed by a pep rally for local athletes including boys and girls varsity players, who faced off at the Ice Center on Saturday night.
Saturday featured Bill Koch Leauge cross-country races and a citizens race. The Waterbury Winter Fest weekend also included cross-country and back-country ski tours, a broomball tournament, snowshoe festival , a community bonfire and skating party, plus food and more.
The weekend is a fun mix of activities, some familiar, some maybe new. Hockey players and fans can see Nordic Ski racers under the lights at Dac Rowe Field on Friday, and the Nordic skiers can support the hockey teams at the Ice Center on Saturday. Then everyone can come together for the big broom ball tournament on Sunday.
Visitors and locals, spectators and participants, varsity athletes, youth league competitors, winter sports enthusiasts of every age and every ability are invited to participate in Winter Fest and experience the world class outdoor recreation opportunities that exist all around Waterbury. Residents and kids will be able to learn about outstanding winter sports opportunities available to them in their own back yards.
Competitors will pay a nominal fee to participate. Funds will support recreational opportunities and economic growth in Waterbury. Organized by the Waterbury Recreation Committee and Harwood Nordic, with the assistance of many volunteers.
